WIRES helps Bacchus Marsh Platypus Alliance venture

The Helen George Mammal Grant Award – replace on Bacchus Marsh Platypus Alliance (BMPA)

WIRES is proud to assist BMPA, a volunteer-led group defending platypuses within the fast-growing Bacchus Marsh area in Victoria. In below 5 years, BMPA has grown from 5 to 65 members, together with a youth membership (Platypus Buddies), and works to safeguard native waterways for platypuses and different native species.

With threats from litter, fishing gear, sediment runoff and stormwater influx, the grant is funding a multi-faceted venture together with:

  • Group Training – Animated movies (in English, Hindi + 1 different language), brochures, contractor booklets, and workshops.
  • Group Motion – Hazard elimination, “Crazy-Litter Blitz-a-thon” occasions, and ongoing clean-ups.
  • Emergency Preparedness – Volunteer coaching for injured platypus and wildlife rescue, with knowledgeable companions.

The venture protects ~30 native platypuses within the Werribee River and helps wider catchment populations by sustaining wholesome, linked habitats. This initiative unites residents, builders, youngsters, and culturally numerous communities in safeguarding one in all Australia’s most iconic and susceptible mammals.
